Having served as a Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S. Mission to NATO during the Bush regime when Americans were almost universally hated by Europeans and the world, I have seen the repercussions of the American tendency to deploy its military might to solve world conflicts. After an outpouring of good will towards our nation after September 11, our hasty actions in Iraq made us, in the world’s eye, arrogant, trigger happy strongmen who cared little about the opinion of the rest of the world.

The killing of Muammar Gaddafi by his own countrymen was historic. For the first time in recent history, America has helped empower a country’s oppressed masses to free themselves from the shackles of ruthless dictator without going in with guns blazing. And we have done so with the support of the international community. This is a major departure from the modus operandi of previous Administrations.

President Obama clearly realizes a fundamental truth that seemed to escape previous Administrations: the only way to help people is by empowering them to help themselves. Then the victory is doubly sweet. Although much maligned for his failure to jump into battle in Libya, the facts reflect that acting through NATO to empower those fighting for their freedom was the right approach.

As a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, I have seen the failure of programs that try to “solve the problems” of other nations. What is much more successful is helping those who are already making the effort to create positive change.

Those who criticize President Obama’s multilateral approach should realize that he is also able to act unilaterally when and if the situation requires. He took an immense risk going into the sovereign nation of Pakistan to take out Osama Bin Ladin without informing the Pakistanis. Previous efforts to take out America’s Enemy Number 1 failed precisely because we shared information with the corrupt Pakistani administration that was focused on preserving the specter of terrorism in order to keep billions of dollars in aid pouring in.

Let this be a lesson for future Administrations. Let’s help the poor and the oppressed of the world not by giving handouts or fighting their battles. Let’s provide them with the tools necessary to achieve their goals. Only when there is a real commitment to effect change within the affected community will true change occur.

By Utterly Opinionated Eve
http://www.utterly-opinionated.com/?cat=8

This lovely little city, Pittsburgh, is under siege. Every day the media describes yet another crisis. Eight more schools to close. Library branches to be shuttered. A court order to fix the water and sewer system. Underfunded pension funds. Property and business taxes that are burdensome. Disappearing bus stops. Disappearing mail boxes. And the latest, a mayor who wants to tax our local college students to balance the city’s books.

Someone has been asleep at the wheel.

It has been decades now since Pittsburgh’s population was halved. Any sensible person would surely understand that half the people + the same number of services = disaster?

For the past decade the question in my head has become louder, more strident. Where is the leadership who will say it the way it is? Where is the leadership that will prepare it’s citizens for reality?

A leader should look like this. She should prepare her city’s citizens for the strategy that must be thought through – a shrinking city strategy. She should find ways to consolidate the city’s citizenry, to consolidate services. She should have the courage to say that upfront. She should focus on how to grow the city. And she should share the plan so that her citizens will understand that there will be pain, but there is also hope. She should know that cities are the future and that Pittsburgh will grow again.

Neither the head of the library system nor the superintendent of the public schools are to blame for the situations they inherited. Audits, anger and outrage will not change that fact.

Senator Snowe’s vote on the Health Bill has shown that she is a gutsy lady, and is ready to support what she believes in despite the repercussions. The fact that the insurance industry has spent upwards of $115 million since Obama took office to Lobby against reform shows how much they had to gain. Perhaps this amount would have been better spent reducing premiums and health care costs rather than paying lobbyists.

Is the Health Care Bill perfect? Certainly not. But making health care affordable for the millions of uninsured Americans is a step in the right direction. Great going, Olympia!

This was written by my 10-year-old niece, who is a budding poet and writer.

A Poem on Racial Tolerance

By Sathya Baskaran

My name is Sathya and I’m ten years old,

Some say I’m different but it’s not as it’s told.

Even though I’m Indian I am pretty much the same,

And I shouldn’t feel regret, nor should I feel shame.

Prejudice is being left behind;

This is the time for everyone to shine.

Though some may laugh and some may sneer,

There shouldn’t be anger and there shouldn’t be fear.

The only problem is with people who don’t know

That we’re past the time for people to be low

Because of where they’re from or the color of their skin,

This is the time for us all to win!

I have felt injustice from people like that

Who care if you’re thin or think that you’re fat

But people like that don’t know what’s true

And that’s the person inside of you!

I am EXTREMELY glad Obama won the election. Since he’s African American, and there was prejudice against African Americans (and there still is some!) more people will accept that we ALL DESERVE THE SAME! Just because we look different doesn’t mean we have to separate ourselves into categories. Religion, culture, where you’re from– it doesn’t matter! It’s character that counts!

YAY OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We did it. The election results speak for themselves. The mere fact that we have come together as a nation to elect a man like Barack Obama, born of a black Muslim man from Kenya and having spent his formative years in Indonesia with his Muslim step-father, should demonstrate in a way that no amount of diplomacy can, that America and Americans have come a long way since Martin Luther King’’s famous ““I Have a Dream”” speech in 1963.

I have seen and experienced racism in this country. When I first arrived from India in the 1960’s at the age of four, many of my classmates would refuse to talk, eat, or play with me because, as they made clear: “”my parents said I can’’t play with colored kids.”” As an attorney, I heard colleagues state under their breath: “These foreigners come and take away our jobs.” But we’’ve made remarkable progress in race relations in recent years.

When Barack Obama first entered the race, most people I spoke to, even black Americans, insisted that he was unelectable. I had doubts myself. His election as the next President of the United States is a tribute to his brilliance, humanity, and his ability to touch those who listen to him. It’’s also a tribute to American voters that we can look beyond race, beyond tactics intended to instill fear and loathing, and vote for someone who is clearly best equipped to lead our nation.

But the most significant impact of this election will be the immediate and dramatic effect it will have on our relationship with the rest of the world. As a U.S. diplomat overseas, I’’ve seen and heard the utter contempt with which the world views America. Undoubtedly, other nations expect us to provide our might and our money to help resolve the world’s problems. But that is because we are a wealthy nation and it is our “”duty”” to do so. At the same time, nations around the world have opposed us in the U.N., at the U.S. Mission to NATO, and in virtually every international organization. Privately, they’’ve explained it as a refusal to bow to American arrogance.

While in Brussels, I was confronted by several of my international colleagues about America’’s unilateral actions and our treatment of minorities. But when I pointed that I, as an Indian American, had been selected to represent the U.S. as a diplomat overseas and asked whether this could ever happen in their own countries, they would become silent. Actions speak louder than words. And electing Barack Obama President of the United States will clearly show the world that today’’s America is not racist. It will show that Americans are forward looking and smart enough to see through the hype and elect an individual who will unite not only this country but the world.

Obama’s primetime infomercial, aired by three networks last night, was an impressive audiovisual display that highlighted his working class roots. The “Oval Office” backdrop was undoubtedly designed to portray him as “Presidential.” He effectively recapped his vision for America and the policies that Americans can look forward to under an Obama Presidency. Most importantly, it may have comforted some voters unsure of Obama’s motives and ambitions. Obama came across as intelligent, likeable, and characteristically Presidential.

Despite all this, it appeared to me an “over the top” campaign event. Obama has a significant lead in the polls and is almost guaranteed a victory in the upcoming election. The McCain camp’s attacks on his character don’t seem to be working. Obama’s throng of energetic volunteers and his well-tuned campaign team are doing their job well. The several million dollars spent on these ads were unnecessary and could possibly portray him as extravagant at a time when frugality is finally becoming a virtue in America.

Obama had my vote before the infomercial. Less than a week from the elections, most voters know who they are voting for – many have already voted. Did the infomercial sway anyone? Perhaps, but maybe not enough to justify the $3 million expense.

The recent revelation that the Republican National Committee spent $150K in two months to outfit and accessorize Sarah Palin and her family doesn’t surprise me. Glamour is undoubtedly an element in wooing voters (and perhaps responsible for Palin’s pick as McCain’s running mate), especially to a candidate whose scanty knowledge of the issues closest to the hearts of Americans in the “lower 48” has alienated even staunch Republicans. I guess the RNC believed that since Palin obviously can’t win voters by her knowledge and intellect, perhaps she could wow them by her glamorous looks.

Well, I have news for you, RNC, this tactic isn’t working. In addition to highlighting the great dichotomy between the lifestyle enjoyed by the McCain-Palin team and the average American, it shows the poor judgment of the Republican Party. At a time when people are losing jobs, worried about their homes, wondering if their kids are going to make it back safely from Iraq, designer attire was not the correct way to impress.
